Are algorithms truly eroding human freedom of thought

Concerns have been raised that artificial intelligence–based algorithms are increasingly influencing human thinking and attention. Elon Musk’s company Neuralink’s head of surgery, Danish Hossain, warned that these algorithms are gradually gaining control over people’s focus and decision-making. According to him, massive investments are being used to build systems designed to capture users’ attention and shape their behavior. Therefore, he emphasized that people must remain aware of how such technologies may affect their minds.

In a post on the social media platform X, Hossain stated that algorithms built with trillions of dollars in investment constantly analyze users’ interests and behavior. Based on this analysis, platforms present content that keeps users engaged for long periods. Preserving the ability to think independently is extremely important, yet algorithms are increasingly influencing that freedom. He compared algorithms to a hidden force that not only controls what people see but also attempts to shape what they think about next. For this reason, he advised users to protect their mental independence and remain mindful of how digital systems influence their thoughts.

Responding to Hossain’s remarks, former xAI engineer Benjamin De Kraker commented that even the chief brain surgeon of Musk’s organization is warning people to resist algorithms. As an expert, Hossain understands the complex ways in which such technologies may influence the human brain.

Technology analysts also note that social media algorithms are intentionally designed to keep users on platforms for longer periods. They usually prioritize content that matches a user’s interests and preferences. As a result, people naturally feel encouraged to spend more time on these platforms. Various studies suggest that such algorithms can increase the risk of addiction among users. They may also contribute to reduced attention spans and, in some cases, be linked to symptoms similar to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, particularly among children.

Notably, Neuralink has long been working to create connections between the human brain and machines. The company, owned by Elon Musk, has developed wireless chips based on Brain–Computer Interface (BCI) technology and has already implanted them in the heads of individuals suffering from several severe neurological conditions.

In our point of view, we believe that algorithms do increase the personalization and efficiency of digital platforms but can also significantly threaten our personal autonomy if algorithms are used without responsibility. By constantly predicting what people are going to see, read, and think about using some form of technology, the technology can slowly restrict how an individual thinks and the ability for that individual to think critically.

Because of this, it is imperative that users gain the knowledge and ability to make decisions in a digital context as well as establish strong self-discipline. In addition, platforms should implement ethical design practices to enable the algorithms to enhance decision-making rather than undermine decision-making by people.
